Meet Mrs.
Elliott
Mrs. Holly Elliott is the professional school counselor at Challenger
Elementary School. She graduated from Western Illinois University
with a bachelor’s degree in special education and University
of Houston-Victoria where she earned a master’s degree in
school counseling. Mrs. Elliott is also a certified teacher. She
taught special education prior to becoming a school counselor.
The Counselor’s
Role
• talk with individual students (one-on-one meeting)
• meet with students in small groups (generally 3-6 sessions)
• visit classrooms to teach all students lessons about things
that will help them in and out of school (6 times per year)
• Consult with teachers, staff, administrators and parents
about things to help make children successful at Challenger
Referring
a Child for Services
All students see the counselor for classroom guidance lessons. However,
some students may need to access counseling or consultative services
offered by Mrs. Elliott. Parents, teachers, and administrators may
refer a child the school counselor. Students themselves may also
request to speak with Mrs. Elliott. (A child may also be referred
for counseling outside the school if the need is determined by the
school counselor.)
Special
Guidance Events
Mrs. Elliott also runs two special guidance events at Challenger,
Red Ribbon Week and Career Day. Red Ribbon Week is in October. During
this time children learn about the dangers of drugs and participate
in some fun activities at Challenger. Career Day is a wonderful
event where parents come to Challenger to speak with students about
their particular job. Career Day will be held in the spring.
Eagle
Patrol
Mrs. Elliott also sets up Eagle Patrol (Challenger’s safety
patrol) for responsible fourth graders. Eagle Patrol is a great
opportunity for students to give a little something back to the
school through volunteering. Students are referred by their homeroom
teachers and must be able to report to their duties early before
school everyday. Each six weeks new Eagle Patrol students are chosen.
Parent permission must be given.
Contacting
Mrs. Elliott
Parents may contact Mrs. Elliott from 8:00-3:45 on school days at
281-485-7912. A note may be dropped off at the school office for
the counselor.
