ALEXANDER MIDDLE SCHOOL
General Music and Choir
2017 - 2018
Welcome! I'm so excited to be teaching at Alexander and look forward to a year full of learning and fun with our students through the joy of music! Following is a bit of information that I hope you will find helpful.
Fifth grade students will attend General Music one to two days per week. Fifth grade students will be learning various music concepts, along with learning to read notation by way of singing games, written work/games/competitions, playing of instruments, and movement. They will learn about composers and music history through listening to music samples and hearing tales of the various composers lives. They will learn about the instruments of the orchestra and other world instruments. And, they will develop an appreciation of music and the arts.
Sixth grade choir students will attend Choir every day. In choir, 6th graders will continue learning music concepts and reading notation through daily participation in music sight reading games/competitions. They will be learning new repetoire that consists of different languages and poetry. They will develop teamwork as a performing group and learn to take pride in the time, effort and collaboration it takes to develop their singing/performing skills.
T-shirts will be made available for sale to Choir and General Music students, as well as faculty, staff and parents. Part of the t-shirt funds will be used to help supplement the choir program and our extra activities. 6th grade choir will also have a choir polo shirt to wear at their concerts. If parents have already paid their student's choir fee, that fee will cover the cost of their student's polo shirt. Choir fees may be paid via the student's Skyward account.
A welcome letter will be sent home with each student in 6th grade choir and 5th grade General Music class, which will include:
- Student/Parent Agreement (6th grade)
- Fee information (6th grade)
- T-shirt order form (6th grade)

Degrees and Certifications:
Bachelor of Music and Master of Music, Kodaly certification and All Level Music certification
I have been teaching music in the public schools for 15 years. I started teaching as an Elementary Music Specialist and in the past three years, have been teaching General Music and Choir at the middle school level. I started playing the piano at age 5 and continued lessons through college. I was a Vocal Arts major at Trinity University, St. Thomas University and University of Houston. I obtained my teaching certificate later in life after performing with the Houston Grand Opera for 15 years and teaching private voice and piano lessons. I still maintain my private home studio and have been singing with St. Pauls United Methodist Church for over 8 years. My greatest joy is teaching Music to children and watching as they grow in their love and appreciation of the Arts!
