We have three different theatre classes here at Miller: Theatre I, Theatre II, and Theatre Production. In addition to our classes, we also have Jr. Thespians who meet once a week after school. Areas of StudyEach semester we will work on a number of performance-based projects focused on teaching a variety of TEKS. Students will be expected to complete performance-based projects in front of audiences, memorize scenes, and evaluate both their own work and the work of their peers. These projects teach not only theatrical skills, but also public speaking, close reading and analysis, memorization, develop self-confidence, the ability to take risks, creative problem-solving, collaboration, perserverance. These are the life-long skills that theatre students take with them, whether or not they decide to pursue theatre beyond the classroom.PerformancesStudents in Theatre I and II will produce an in-class play. The fall performance will be during their class times. Parents are invited to attend!

About the Director
Renee van Nifterik is an actor, teacher, and director. Her passion for theatre and acting began in high school and she has been involved in performance in one form or another ever since. She received her B.A. in English from Western Michigan University, and M.A. in Library and Information Science from the University of North Texas. Currently, she is pursuing a second Master's Degree in Theatre Production and in the process of becoming a Nationally Certified Chekhov Teacher. This is her fourth year of teaching at Berry Miller Junior High.
Renee is the founder and Artistic Director of the Pearl Theater where she programs and oversees 8-10 productions and events a year, performs in shows, and directs performances. Previously, Renee directed such youth and teen productions as Anne Frank and Me, The Shape of the Grave, The Wizard of Oz, Wonderland the Musical, We Are Monsters and more. Some of her favorite past acting credits include Lady Macbeth (Macbeth), Hermoine (The Winter's Tale), Rizzo (Grease), Bully (In the Blood) and Beneatha (A Raisin in the Sun) among others. She is married and has two cats, Pearl and Coconut.
