Ovation Theatre at Dawson High School has a proud history of accomplishments. It is our responsibility to build upon these successes and set higher standards for this year and for the future. We are privileged to have parents, teachers, administration, and a school board who are committed to having a quality theatre education program in Pearland ISD.
Our educational goals are to develop competent theatre performers, promote theatre appreciation, enhance the development of responsibility as a citizen, and foster good self-discipline in members of the Ovation Theatre program.

Mr. John Grimmett, Director of Theatre
John Grimmett is a composer, writer, and director.
His work has been performed internationally by such theatre and opera companies as the Washington National Opera, Fort Worth Opera and the Baltic Chamber Opera Theatre as well as at universities and conservatory training programs across the United States. The composer of musical theatre and art songs as well as solo instrumental, chamber, and choral works, Mr. Grimmett is the recipient of the 2014 Festival Award in Opera from the Boston-International Contempo Festival and the 2015 runner-up for The American Prize in Composition (Opera, Theater and Film Division).
Mr. Grimmett’s mentors include Edward Albee, Jake Heggie, and David Ashley White. He also studied at the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at New York University, where he was a recipient of the Max Dreyfus Award from the ASCAP Foundation in recognition of his talent as a musical theatre composer.
Prior to coming to Dawson High School, Mr. Grimmett taught at Pearland JH East, leading the department to two consecutive first place wins in the 2016 and 2017 Pearland ISD Junior High UIL One Act Play Competition. He is also a teaching artist for the Red Door Theatre Company (Pasadena, TX) and the Director of Educational Programming for CMASH (San Francisco, CA), a new music repertory group dedicated to establishing long-term collaborative relationships between composers and performers. When not teaching, he lives in New York City.
Tutoring for Theatre Arts classes are held in the mornings before school begins. Due to the department's production schedule, afternoon tutoring sessions are generally not available due to production rehearsals. Students may schedule alternative tutoring sessions with Mr. Grimmett by appointment only.
Conferences between the teacher and parents may be scheduled at any time. Phone conferences may be scheduled via e-mail -- please include your most convenient time for a phone call upon your request. Responses to voicemail, e-mail and conference requests will be made within 24 hours of the official request or the following Monday if the request is made on Friday after 12:00pm.
