Meet the Teacher
Hello splendid second graders! My name is Mrs. Burkhalter and I am very excited to see you soar to new heights this year. It is going to be a year of learning and adventures. I look forward to learning all about you, but first I’ll tell you about me.
I was born and raised in New Mexico. I am the youngest of four. I have 2 brothers and a sister. My parents are retired teachers. My mother taught 1st grade and my father was a high school science teacher. I went to college at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM. When I graduated I moved to the Houston area. I still go home to visit my family as often as I can.
Some of my hobbies include reading, gardening and hiking. I currently live in Pearland with my wonderful husband, Doug, who is a college professor at U of H Downtown. We both love teaching, listening to live music and just spending time together. This summer we spent time visiting family and hiking. Even though we had tons of fun, we are both looking forward to the new school year.
This is my second year at Challenger Elementary, but my 21st year in education. I have taught 2nd grade and 5th grade. I also spent a couple of years as a Literacy Coach where I was given the opportunity to work in all K-5 classrooms on my campus.
I look forward to the fun year we have ahead. I am thrilled to be your 2nd grade teacher!
