School Nutrition Policy

In March 2004, the Texas Department of Agriculture issued the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy to promote a healthier environment in schools. According to the state, 35 percent of Texas children are considered obese or overweight. This is a 10 percent increase over the past decade. Administrators of Pearland ISD agree with the TDA that this trend represents a crisis that needs to be addressed.

August 1, 2004, all Texas public schools participating in the federal child nutrition programs (National School Lunch Program, School breakfast Program and the After School Snack program) must comply with the guidelines outlined in the Nutrition Policy. Because these are state-mandated nutritional guidelines, they will affect Pearland ISD students. The Food Services Department wants to inform parents/guardians of the new nutrition guidelines and provide answers to important questions.

The nutrition guidelines are specific to each grade level. Therefore, the guidelines that affect elementary students are different than those that apply to middle school, junior high and high school students.
