    The grades K-12 social studies program is committed to develop curricular strategies that promote students' ownership of learning so they become lifelong learners. As a result, students will be able perform at their highest potential and become contributing citizens of tomorrow.


Curriculum

  • Pearland ISD's goal for social studies instruction is to provide curriculum that prepares students for responsibilities and success in the 21st century through active participation in democratic and free enterprise systems. The curriculum is aligned to state mandates found in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

Assessments

  • Pearland ISD social studies are formally assessed through locally-developed benchmark tests as well as the STAAR/STAAR EOC assessments.STAAR Benchmark

Initiatives

  • Purposeful Planning
    Planning for rigorous instruction that incorporates social studies best practices (e.g., "I will" statements, DBQ project, SOPAS/OPTIC, formative assessments and reading comprehension skills)

    Textbook Adoption
    Guide teachers through the textbook adoption process

    Social Studies Integration
    Secondary focus includes expository reading and writing (DBQ for grades 7-11 and SAR cross-curricular implementations).

    STAAR Alignment
    STAAR countdown; vertical support in grades 7, 9 and 10; social studies skills (K-12 focus)

    Mobile Learning
    Targeted staff development with narrowed focus on Symbaloo, SAS, QR codes and Quizlet

    Mentoring/Coaching
    The social studies specialist works with new and veteran teachers through pre-conferencing, modeled lessons, teacher observations and debriefing.

    Staff Development
    The social studies specialist provides training that supports the vision and strategies of the Pearland ISD District Improvement Plan, equips teachers with best practices and raises awareness about differentiation.
