Effective use of finite classroom space is one of the primary challenges for any teacher. The music classroom is no exception. The primary challenge is this wide span of grade levels taught and the variety of activities in a progressive music program.
Below is the final classroom arrangement of the 2013-2014 school year and will be how we begin 2014-2015.
The flexible space in the middle generally contains rows or arcs of seating for group singing, accordions and other instruments, viewing the screen, and other whole-class activities. The chairs can be removed for activities that require more space such as circle games, parachute and scarfs, and dancing.
The four student computer stations each contain a computer, 6 headphones with independent volume control, a 25-key MIDI piano keyboard. In 2013-2014, each station had a piano. Though they are acoustic and sound wonderful, they take up LOTS of space. In the Fall of 2014, we should be receiving four synthesizers for student composition projects.
The object in the center and the line at the top are the projector and screen.
