Dr. Glenn Garrison, a dentist for Westside Dental Center, originally served on the board from 1994 to 2006, holding the offices of vice-president and president two years each. A longtime Pearland resident, Dr. Garrison graduated from Pearland High School in 1980. In the community, he has served as a member of the city’s zoning board of adjustments and as director of the Brazoria County Groundwater Conservation District. Dr. Garrison and his wife, Jennifer, have four children -- three of whom attend Pearland ISD schools. “Education is our first priority. My goal is to give the district’s patrons the absolute highest academic value per dollar spent,” he said.

Adele Brennan

Position 7
Adele Brennan, an accountant for Lockheed Martin Mission Services, graduated from Pearland High School in 1980. She and her husband, Jeff, a Brazoria County Drainage Commissioner, have two sons, also PHS graduates. In addition to being a lifelong member of St. Helen Catholic Church, Mrs. Brennan serves on the Pearland Neighborhood Center and the Northern Brazoria County Education Alliance Board of Directors. With over 25 years’ experience in corporate finance and accounting, she feels there is a place for business-minded leadership on the board. Serving as the board’s legislative representative, Mrs. Brennan believes in the importance of building good relationships and interlocal agreements with other governmental entities to enhance Pearland ISD programs. She was selected in 2008 as a Region IV representative to the Legislative Advisory Council that worked to create Texas Association of School Boards’ position statements for the state legislature. “The school district has a responsibility to the community to provide a thorough education to students and to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely,” Mrs. Brennan said.

Position 1
Dean Hamil, an account manager for Lubrizol Corporation, has served as a member of the District-wide Education Improvement Council and Rustic Oak Elementary’s PTA and Campus Education Improvement Council. Since moving to Pearland in 1990, he has also volunteered for local little league and softball groups and the Pearland High School Touchdown Club. A 1983 graduate of Friendswood High School, Mr. Hamil has served as the president of the Sunset Meadows/Sunset Lakes Homeowners’ Association. He and his wife, Rhonda, Shadycrest Elementary’s registrar, have three children attending Pearland ISD schools. “With diversity within the school population growing, we need to make sure we are meeting the needs of all of our students,” Mr. Hamil said.

Virgil Gant, a financial advisor and certified financial planner with Edward Jones in Pearland, previously served on the board of trustees from 1997 to 2006. A Pearland resident for over 20 years, Mr. Gant has also served on the Pearland Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors. He and his wife, Pearland pediatrician Dr. Deborah Gant, have four children and two grandchildren who have attended Pearland schools. Mr. Gant received his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and a master’s in business administration from Oklahoma City University. “I believe Pearland ISD can and should be both academically and fiscally the finest public school system in the state,” he said.

Position 6
Suzy Roberts, a retired clinical nurse specialist in child/adolescent mental health (MSN, UTHSC '80), moved to Pearland with her husband, Jay, in 1983. A two-term past president of Houston Association of Psychiatric Nurses, Mrs. Roberts has served as a Campus Education Improvement Council member, the president of Silverlake PTA, the past president of Great Academics for Pearland and a substitute librarian. She garners her management experience from positions as director of critical care for the University of Kentucky Medical Center and director of nursing for West Oaks Psychiatric Hospital. She currently serves on the board of the Houston-Galveston Area Council. She and her husband, a tenured physics professor at Rice University, have a daughter who attends Glenda Dawson High School. “Public education is one of our most democratic freedoms and requires nurturing. America can retain pre-eminence only by creating the most effectively educated citizens of the world,” Mrs. Roberts said.

Lillian Smith

Position 5
Lillian Smith has served on the board since 1992, longer than any other current member. In that time, Mrs. Smith has held every board position, including president. A graduate of Pearland High School, she is a life member of Pearland EMS, where she worked for many years as a paramedic and communications director. While her two children attended Pearland ISD schools, Mrs. Smith served as a parent volunteer and mentor. During her years on the school board, she has also participated in the Academy of Finance. Mrs. Smith attends Shadycrest Baptist Church, where she serves on the church’s finance and scholarship committees. She and her husband, Sam, a railroad engineer, have several grandchildren. “My goal for the district is to see every student who walks through our doors walk out prepared for life, whether as a professional, a community leader or the president of the United States,” Mrs. Smith said.

Position 4
Andrew Solomon, a South Texas College of Law associate law professor, has lived in Pearland since 1999. An advocate for higher academics, Mr. Solomon currently serves as a member of Great Academics for Pearland. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan and a doctorate of law from Boston University School of Law. Mr. Solomon and his wife, Mary Ann, have two children who attend Pearland ISD schools. “As a board member, I promise to base every decision on what is best for the long-term success of our children. Every student should have the resources and opportunities needed to succeed,” he said.
