Banking and Financial Systems

This course introduces banking and finance concepts, principles and procedures, emphasizes the role of
money in the modern economy, recognizes theories and financial forces that influence international business;
and compares consumer financial transactions with government transactions. Students learn about major
functions of banks and other depository institutions, their in-house operations and procedures, central
banking through the Federal Reserve System and current trends in the banking industry. Students will invest
in a simulated Stock Market Game, earn "money" for attending class and use real-world skills to purchase a
car, a house and spend the earnings at the end of the semester. In addition, they will have the opportunity
to job shadow at local financial institutions. Students can earn 3 college credits through Tech Prep and ATC.
Fall only - It is recommended that students take Securities and Insurance in the spring
semester as a follow up to this course.
To receive Tech Prep, ATC credit, and DAP recognition, Banking and Finance Systems and Computerized Accounting II must be taken before graduation.

Accounting I (Computerized)

A basic understanding of Accounting is essential to anyone interested in pursuing a business degree. This
course introduces general accounting concepts, principles and procedures with an emphasis on the
fundamental equation and its application. During the second semester, students will use utilize a software
program to practice and enhance skills. Membership into the national organization of Business Professionals
of America is encouraged.

Accounting II (Computerized)

This course provides for review and further development of fundamental accounting principals with extensive use of software programs; incorporates complete accounting cycle in relation to formation and dissolution of partnerships, includes adjustments of bad debts, depreciation, depletion of fixed assets, adjusted and accrued income, various methods of inventory control, preparation of business budgets and notes receivable and payable; develops skill in applying principles used in accounting systems and methods commonly found in business. Accounting II is designed for students interested in continuing at the post secondary level or entering the work force. Membership in the national organization of Business Professionals of America is encouraged.

Business Management

What does your future hold? In this computerized, multimedia course you will learn to be a consumer, employee and manager, because to succeed in any career today you must understand all three. You will decipher issues regarding business ethics, the environment, personnel issues, diversity, success secrets and more in the workplace and in life. Career Connections
This is an activity-based career development course that provides linkages between classroom experiences,
community resources and experiences, and career choices to real world outcomes. Opportunities will be
provided to develop and/or improve self-awareness in relation to career opportunities and options and the
related education, training and lifelong learning and success in all adult roles. Exploration and experiences of
a variety of career options within specific career concentrations and the development and/or refining of
employability skills will be included.

Keyboarding
This course develops psychomotor skills in operating the keyboard to help the student develop acceptable speed and accuracy levels by emphasizing touch-keyboarding skills. Keyboarding also provides instruction in the formatting of basic documents for personal, college, and business use. This course is essential in the development of speed and accuracy in word processing.

Business Multimedia (BIMM)

Don't let the technology age pass you by. This course is the latest in multimedia production: Photoshop, Flash, Publisher, and Dreamweaver. Business Multimedia develops proficiencies in designing, importing, and manipulating advanced text, graphics, audio, and video used in presentation management and multimedia production. Students are encouraged to join the Business Professionals of America student organization.
This course counts for the required Technology Applications Credit for graduation.

In addition, students gain knowledge of telecommunications, desktop publishing, presentation management, networking, operating systems, and emerging technologies. Skills are developed at an intermediate level, and students are prepared for the IC3 certification exam. Students are encouraged to become active in Business Professionals of America.

This course provides students with the opportunity to learn the advanced technology skills required in the
work place. Included are advanced training in word processing applications, spreadsheets, database,
presentation management, desktop publishing, operating systems, telecommunications, website authoring,
and other emerging technologies. Students are prepared for the Microsoft Office Specialists (MOS)
certification exam. Pearland High School is an iQcenter (Authorized Testing Center for Microsoft
certifications). Students are encouraged to become active members in Business Professionals of America.

Securities & Insurance

Securities and Insurance is a one-semester course that looks at two sectors of financial services from the perspective of the consumer and industry specialist. Students receive an overview of front and back office operations in both the securities and insurance sectors, examine career paths in both areas, and gain insight into the current issues faced by the industry. An emphasis is placed on examining the impact of technology on the finance sectors and on evaluating career paths available. Membership in the national organization of Business Professionals of America is encouraged.
Spring only - This course is recommended as a follow up course to Banking and Finance (offered in the fall semester).

Telecommunications & Networking (Net+ Certification)

Industry is demanding employees with skills in information technology! This modular course will provide students with an in-depth exploration of telecommunications. Through the modular software, students will be able to access on-line services, create and install web pages, and prepare for the Comp TIA Net+ Certification exam. If you are planning on a career using technology, then you will need this certification for a basic foundation. Students are encouraged to become active in the Business Professionals of America student organization.

Computer Maintenance (A+ Certification)

Computer Maintenance will prepare the student to pass the Comp TIA A+ Certification exam, which
certifies the competency of entry-level computer technicians. This course provides students the opportunity
to solve real-life maintenance problems and upgrade fully functional PC's. Topics covered are basic PC
architectural peripheral devices and the Windows operating system. To have a career in the computer
maintenance/repair you will need this certification. Students are encouraged to become active in the Business
Professionals of America student organization.

Independent Study for Business
(Can count as a DAP measure)
A project-based learning experience developed by a student, teacher, and an interdisciplinary mentor team. The project provides opportunities for an in-depth study of at least one aspect of the business area. The student demonstrates the ability to utilize a variety of resources, advanced technology, and communication skills in the development and presentation of the project. This activity meets one of the Distinguished Achievement Program measures.
