Child Development I

(Can count as Tech Prep, ATC College Credit, and a DAP measure when taken with Preparation for Parenting course)

This course introduces the student to all aspects of the developing child. Topics consist of pre-marriage considerations, prenatal development, childbirth, the responsibilities of becoming a parent, the growth of young children, and the investigation of careers related to children. Students will observe and interact with young children through childcare labs and field trips. Membership in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is encouraged.

To receive Tech Prep and ATC credit, students must complete Child Development I and Preparation for Parenting (or sequence of courses) in the 11th or 12th grade.

Preparation for Parenting

This one semester course will help the student develop skills and attitudes needed for success as future parents or in careers related to children. The importance of positive, nurturing relationships is stressed. Membership in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is encouraged. Related courses: Child Development and Individual and Family Life.

To receive Tech Prep and ATC credit, students must complete Child Development I and Preparation for Parenting (or sequence of courses) in the 11th or 12th grade.

Personal & Family Development

This lab course introduces the student to the basic skills needed for successful home life as both homemaker and consumer. In the fall semester, students are introduced to the study of nutritional needs, simple meal planning and perparation, decision making and management skills. In the spring semester, topics include introduction to design, clothing selection and care, construction of a simple garment, understanding and improving family relationships, and child care.

Apparel

This lab course focuses on apparel from the personal decision making related to apparel, the apparel and fashion industry and career preparation. Topics include wardrobe planning, apparel maintenance and fashion design. Students will be required to complete an apparel project. Interior Design

This course covers the concepts and skills needed to successfully decorate a home or business. The content includes the utilization of the elements and principles of design and the investigation of careers in Interior Design. Nutrition and Food Science

This lab course allows students to develop an understanding of nutrition not only for individual nutritional needs but also for investigation in related careers in nutrition. Study will include food safety, choosing healthy foods, food preparation, and meal management. Membership in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is encouraged.

Food Science Technology

This course is for students interested in careers in the food industry - dietician, chef, hotel restaurant management. Students study nutrition and wellness, food technology, world food supply, diet-related disorders, chemical and physical changes that affect food product quality, technologies used in food processing and product development, food safety and sanitation standards, legal issues and food policies. This is a lab class, and the students will practice the basic skills required by the food industry.

To receive Tech Prep and ATC credit and DAP recognition Nutrition and Food Science and Food Science Technology (or sequence of courses) must be taken in the 11th or 12th grade.

Parenting Skills for School Age Parents

This Family and Consumer Science class for pregnant and parenting students addresses issues of self-esteem, problem solving, decision making, prepared childbirth education, parenting skills, wellness of children, job skills and career preparation, TAKS remediation and counseling. This course fulfills the parenting component of PEP program participants.

PREREQUISITE: Student must be pregnant, a parent, or an expectant father. Max of 2 credits

Independent Study for Family & Consumer Science

(Can count as a DAP measure)

This course will allow students to research areas in the field of Family and Consumer Science. Students will have a mentor, complete an advanced research project, and make a presentation to an audience of teachers, community members, and their peers. This project meets one of the Distinguished Achievement Measures.

Ready, Set, Teach! I

This class is designed to introduce students to the field of teaching. It provides students background knowledge of children and adolescent development principles as well as principles of effective teaching practicies. Students work under the direction of a family and consumer science teacher and exemplary educators.
