Medical (Health) Science Technology I

(Can count as Tech Prep, ATC College Credit, and a DAP measure when taken with Medical Terminology)

Meets Health Credit requirements for graduation

This course is designed to give an overview of the health care industry. Topics include health careers, medical ethics, therapeutic communication, medical terminology, abbreviations, emergency care, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, and disease processes. This course helps prepare the student for employment in the health care field. Basic skills are taught such as C.P.R. and taking vital signs. All class members are encouraged to join HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).

To receive Tech Prep credit students must complete course (or sequence of related courses) in the 11th or 12th grade.

Medical (Health) Science Technology II (Clinical Rotation)

Meets all PE Credit requirements for graduation

(Can count as Tech Prep credit and a DAP measure)

This course is designed to help a student to develop thorough understanding of health care and also to develop more fully the basic skills necessary in health care delivery. Students will intern at Memorial Southeast Hospital during the first semester. This three-credit course is designed to allow students interested in pursuing the health care field to shadow medical personnel in a variety of hospital departments. These range from Physical Therapy, Radiology, Nursing Care, Pharmacy and Emergency Room, to Surgery, ICU, Medical Records, Lab and others. In the second semester students will pursue certifications. All class members are expected to become dues paying members of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).

Medical Terminology

(Can count as Tech Prep, ATC College Credit, and a DAP measure when taken with Medical Science Technology I)

This course introduces students to medical terminology used in the health care industry. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and babreviations. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student's ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in the medical field. Students are encouraged to join HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). This
course is offered in the fall and in the spring semester.

Pharmacology

This course will help build a foundation for a career in the pharmaceutical field. Students will be introduced to the regulations governing the pharmaceutical industry, to basic technologies used, to measurement systems and calculations, to safety, to nutritional information, and to ethical behavior standards. Students are encouraged to join HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).

Pharmacy Technician (CPhT Certification)

This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills for certification or licensure as a Pharmacy Technician. Students will complete an intense study of the basic terms and definitions used in this profession as well as the ethical issues involved in the profession. Students will be introduced to the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and the PTCB examination structure. Through a modular program, PassAssured, they will have the opportunity to practice for the exam. Student will participate in job shadowing opportunities through the semester.

This class will only be offered in the spring semester for two consecutive periods.
Students must be 18 years old to take the national exam.

Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA Certification)

An occupationally specific course designed to provide knowledge and skills for certification as a certified nurse assistant. Students develop advanced clinical skills necessary for employment in the health care industry as a nurse assistant. The course will be taught in both the classroom and offsite at a long term care facility.   At least 24 hours offsite instruction is required for the completion of the nurse assistant training. After completing the required coursework and offsite training, the student is eligible to take the State certification exam to become a Certified Nurse Assistant.

This course will be offered in the fall semester for two consecutive periods.

Independent Study Mentorship for Medical Science

(Can count as a DAP measure)

Independent Study Mentorship in Medical Science Technology is an upper-level course developed for highly motivated students who have an interest in a specific area of health and medicine. Students are able to work off-campus two days a week under the guidance of a medical mentor. The project provides opportunities for an in-depth study of one aspect of the medical field. This project-based course meets one of the Distinguished Achievement Program measures.
