MATHEMATICS

The grades K – Calculus BC program strives to meet the academic needs of each student to produce mathematically-astute individuals capable of incorporating critical thinking skills and multiple approaches to problem solving.

The math curriculum is designed to foster a stimulating learning environment through investigative, hands-on activities, diversified experiences, and current technology. This program offers all students a strong foundation for understanding concepts and the chance to engage in the language of mathematics. The curriculum connects the concepts across grade levels.

This program strives to develop an appreciation for and a positive attitude toward math, encourage further mathematical study, and instill a responsibility for learning. As a result, students acquire the tools needed to become productive members of society with expanded career opportunities.

SCIENCE

Through their study of the natural world, Pearland ISD science students should learn not only that science involves changing and increasing knowledge but that science may not answer all questions. Students should also understand that certain questions can be answered by investigation and that methods, models, and conclusions from these investigations change as new observations are made.

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for science identifies what Texas students should know and be able to do at every grade and in every course in the required curriculum. These learning standards help ensure that all students are prepared to meet future challenges. Through research-based instructional methods, all students will have equal access to challenging, meaningful learning and achievement in science.

Pearland ISD’s vision is to be the leader in science education, and its mission is to promote excellence and innovation for all in science teaching and learning. The strategic plan has identified these four critical goals to guide the district in preparing students to succeed in high school science and beyond:

  1. Engage all science teachers continually to improve science education.
  2. Improve student learning by supporting and enhancing science teaching.
  3. Advocate the importance of science literacy and the development of scientific expertise.

Enhance science education through research-based policy and practice.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The Pearland ISD social studies curriculum department strives to assist educators in aligning the key elements of curriculum, instruction, and assessment into a coherent system that can enhance student achievement as measured by classroom, district, and statewide assessments. Powerful and Authentic Social Studies (PASS) training creates teachers who are equipped with the principles and practices that lead to powerful, engaging social studies education.

The department’s goal is to provide strategies and content to ensure the following:

  • Pearland ISD students are active, eager learners.
  • Social studies curriculum is aligned with state standards.
  • Design assessments help students master subject matter.
  • The district energizes experienced and new teachers through professional development.
  • The district offers valuable, systematic social studies instruction.
  • Students graduate as informed, active citizens who are lifelong learners.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Classroom management falls into three broad areas: Instruction, Motivation, and Discipline.  Using Fred Jones’ approach to classroom management, teachers gain the tools for teaching needed to enhance learning for all children.  Effective classroom management saves the teacher time and effort.  Curriculum and Instruction Specialists offer direct campus support in the area of classroom management. PDAS

The goal of the Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS) is to “enhance student learning through the professional development of teachers.” Curriculum and Instruction Specialists assist Human Resource Specialists in providing orientation and training of the PDAS.
