Visual Arts Art 1
This course is designed for the beginning art student. Emphasis is placed on exploration of a variety of media and methods. There is additional emphasis on problem solving and creative thinking skills.

Art 1 – Intermediate
This Art course is designed for the intermediate art student who due to previous art classes or personal practice believes his or her art skills are beyond that of the beginning student. Emphasis will be on selfdiscovery, creative thinking skills and problem solving. The students will explore various methods and media. The students in this class will also develop a portfolio and be required to enter competitions. REQUIRED FEE: $15.00 per semester

Art 2 Drawing
This course is designed to build on the experiences of Art I, offering more complex activities for skill and technique development. Drawing will be explored through a variety of media while stressing problem solving and creative thinking.

Art 2 Sculpture
Students will work with many sculpture materials such as paper, wire, clay, and found objects. Emphasis will be placed on the elements and principles of design, the practice of good craftsmanship, and the study of sculpture from a variety of cultures past and present. Students will also learn about aesthetics while using sculpture as a means of communication.

Art 2 Painting
This course is designed to build on the experiences of Art I offering more complex activities for skill and technique development. Problem solving and creative thinking are a part of each assignment.

Performing Arts
Cadet Band (Band 1)
This class is open to students whose basic fundamentals of playing a musical instrument are below that of Concert Band. Concentration will be on improving tone production and rhythmic understanding. Auditions are required.
REQUIRED FEE: $40 per year for students playing school owned instruments $50 per year for students who are NOT in Marching Band
$140 per year for students who are in Marching Band

Concert Band (Band 2)
Concert Band is open to students whose areas of tone production; tone control, rhythm reading, and sight-reading are below higher level bands. Competitive activities are strongly encouraged. Some students may select to participate in the marching band. Auditions are required on assigned music to qualify for membership. REQUIRED FEE: $140 per year for students who are in marching band
$50 per year for students who are NOT in marching band $40 per semester for students playing school owned instruments

Symphonic Band (Band 3)
This course is open to students whose areas of tone production, tone control, rhythm, and sight reading are not as advanced as those who qualify for Honors Band. Competitive and after school activities are required. Auditions are required on assigned music to qualify for membership.

Percussion (Band 1)
Open to students who qualify for marching band. Competitive and after school activities are required. Summer activities are required. Auditions are required on assigned music to qualify for membership. This class is only offered first semester.

Band Color Guard
Open to students who are advanced in the areas of equipment and movement technique and performance. Competitive and after school activities are required. Summer camps are required. Auditions are required to qualify for membership. This class is only offered first semester.

Band Winter Guard
Open to students who are advanced in the areas of equipment and movement technique and performance. Competitive and after school activities are required. Auditions are required to qualify for membership. This class is only offered second semester. REQUIRED FEE: $200

Choir Boys
Boys will sing popular and concert music and concentrate on development of sight-reading skills. Participation in fall, Christmas and spring concerts is required. Boys may also participate in concert sightreading, solo and ensemble, and region choir competitions.

Choir Kantorei
Mixed choir open to singers who demonstrate advanced sight-reading and singing skills. Participate in; sectional rehearsals, solo, and ensemble, concert and sight-reading, and all concert events is required. Students in this class will be required to enroll in the Kantorei Ensemble class. REQUIRED FEE: $30

Choir Varsity Girls
This treble choir is open to girls in GRADES 9-12. Sight-reading and singing skills are emphasized. Members may participate in region choir auditions, solo and ensemble contest. No out of school rehearsals are required except for special programs. Students are required to participate in the fall, Christmas and spring concerts. REQUIRED FEE: $30

Dance 1
Fundamental dance skills including ballet, modern, jazz, and tap will be covered as well as the development and improvement of body movements through aerobics. Dance may count as a Fine Arts or a PE credit. It cannot count for both in any given year.

Dance 2 This course is a continuation of Dance 1 with the inclusion of the following techniques: folk, character, and ethnic. Dance may count as a Fine Arts credit or a PE credit. It cannot count for both in any given year.

Drill Team Training
This course will teach the dance skills needed to audition for the drill team. This course is mandatory for tryouts, but does not ensure placement on the Drill Team. Students interested in trying out for Drill Team must enroll in this course for the Fall Semester.

Drill Team
The Drill Team is dedicated to the idea of creating a precision dance and drill team organization for the purpose of providing quality entertainment at half time for football and basketball games. Members also participate in drill team competition and community functions. Its members are composed of students from all four grade levels whose moral and academic standards are highest caliber. Drill Team may count as either a Fine Arts credit or a PE credit. It cannot count for both in any given year.

Theater Arts 1
This course is a basic introduction to theater arts. Topics include theater history, script structure, theater terminology, stage movement, and character development. Performance work consists of improvisational skits, memorized duet scenes, and prepared monologues. All theater art students are required to see two DHS productions during the each semester.

Theater Arts 2
This course is a continuation of Theater Arts 1 and is designed for students with a genuine interest in theater. Topics include advanced stage movement, voice and diction development, audition techniques, and character analysis. Performance work consists of memorized monologues, duets, and one acts plays. All theater arts students are required to see two DHS productions during the each semester.

Topics covered include basic building and painting techniques, lighting design and application, sound, perspective, mask and prop production. The Technical Theater classes provide sets for student productions and are required to attend all student productions.

Communication Arts
Communication Applications
The successful participation in professional and social life, students must develop effective communication skills. Students enrolled in Communication Applications will be expected to identify, analyze, develop and evaluate communication skills needed for professional and social success in interpersonal situations, group interactions, and personal and professional presentations.

Newspaper Production 1
This is a basic course to understand the working of the American newspaper by teaching the student to write in newspaper style. It covers areas such as news, feature, sports and editorial writing as well as desktop publishing, computer graphics, and photojournalism.

Photojournalism
This is a one-semester course that introduces the student to the workings of a manual adjustable camera (f/stops and shutter speeds) and darkroom procedure. Students learn the chemistry behind film development and printing. Students will take pictures, develop film and print pictures. DHS does not supply cameras. Students who register for this class must be able to purchase a camera and the supplies. If you already have a camera the other supplies cost approximately $50 - $75. ( DHS students will use a digital camera.)

Yearbook Production 1
The student will learn yearbook layout style, copy writing, headline writing, basic typography, photographic selection, page composition, and desktop publishing. The class actually produces the school yearbook.
