Hurricane attendance waiver approved
Pearland ISD students will not be required to make up the 10 instruction days lost Sept. 12-25 because of Hurricane Ike, thanks to an attendance waiver approved by Texas Education Agency this month.
The TEA waiver releases both students and district employees from making up the days schools were closed. To recover lost classroom time, principals and teachers are tightening curriculum and revising instruction calendars for the remainder of the school year.
During the school board’s Sept. 30 special meeting, Superintendent Dr. Bonny Cain received board approval to submit a waiver request to TEA.
In addition, the board passed a resolution that excused employee absences from Sept. 12-24 and authorized payment of salaries or wages to all employees for those days. Employees returned Thursday, Sept. 25, one day before students.
