District offers free, reduced-price meals

Shadycrest Elementary students
Pearland ISD is accepting applications for free and reduced-price meals for the 2012-13 school year.

The meals are available for children served under the National School Lunch Program and Breakfast Program.

In addition, foster children who are the legal responsibility of a state agency or court may be eligible for free meal benefits, regardless of the income of their household.

The completed application will be used to determine eligibility and verify data. Applications may be submitted anytime during the school year for school officials to review.

Anyone interested in reviewing Pearland ISD's free and reduced-price meal policy may visit the Food Service Office, 1928 N. Main.

Applying for Free/Reduced-Price Meals

Applications for meal benefits will be available at campuses during enrollment dates.

Beginning in August, online applications may also be accessed at www.pearlandisd.org by choosing Free/Reduced Lunch App. under "Quick Links" (if the link is not available, please try again later).

For a printed copy of the application, please call the Food Service Office at 281.412.1244.

Determining Eligibility

The household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Students from households whose income is at or below the levels listed on the application are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

For school officials to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price benefits, households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits -- formerly food stamps -- or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) have to list only the child's name and SNAP or TANF case number. If a paper application is used, an adult household member must sign the application.

Households that do not list a SNAP/TANF case number must list the names of all household members, the amount and source of the income received by each household member and the Social Security number of the adult household member who signs the application.

If the adult who signs the application does not have a Social Security number, he or she must indicate that a Social Security number is not available by writing the word "none," "no number" or some other indication that a Social Security number is not available.

Requesting a Hearing/Notification of Changes

Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price meal policy, a Food Service clerk will review applications and determine eligibility. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the ruling of the official may wish to discuss the decision informally with the reviewing official.

Parents who wish to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision may call or write Cary Partin, Senior Assistant Superintendent for Support Services, at 281.485.3203 or 1928 N. Main, Pearland, TX 77581.

If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the Food Service Office at 281.412.1244. These changes may make the household's children eligible for benefits if the household income falls at or below the levels approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
