An elite Pearland High School choir has earned elite recognition for its performance quality.
The PHS Chamber Choir has been the only 5A mixed choir invited to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio next February.
Each year, Texas middle school, high school and college choirs compete for the invitation to sing at the TMEA convention. This year, after a blind evaluation of recordings submitted by 130 choirs, a panel of judges selected only 12 to perform.
"Performing at a TMEA convention is one of the highest honors given to any music ensemble in our state. Texas music education is well-respected across the country," Derrick Bready, PHS Chamber Choir director, said.
This year the Chamber Choir comprises 75 voices in grades 10-12. Students, who are selected by audition, must demonstrate superior vocal and sight-singing ability.
In 2011, the PHS Men's Choir also received an invitation to perform at the TMEA convention.
