HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education Philosophy

Exercise and recreation are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary, because health is worth more than learning.

~Thomas Jefferson

Obesity is a nation-wide problem. More and more adolescents and adults are becoming obese, causing a crisis in our health care system. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of physical education is to gain knowledge, skills and an understanding of the process of becoming fit. Hopefully, students will be motivated to strive for lifetime personal fitness with an emphasis on the health-related components of physical fitness.

Physical Education Information

In physical education classes, students will apply physiological principles related to exercise and training such as warm up/cool down, overload, frequency, intensity, specificity and progression. Besides cardiovascular endurance and flexibility, students will be able to experience muscular strength and endurance. Students will also understand components to healthy nutrition.

Students are expected to dress out in a physical education suit that is purchased ($15.00) when a student enters a physical education class. Students are expected to engage in various skills for several different sports/activities. Students are graded on participation, physical improvement and success and knowledge of the sport/activity.

Students need 3 semesters (or a year and a half) of physical education credits. Usually these credits are divided into TEAM SPORTS, INDIVIDUAL SPORTS and PERSONAL FITNESS. Health is NOT a physical education credit.

Health Information

Health is perhaps the single most important pursuit in life. Good physical, emotional, mental, and social health are essential to enjoying life and living it to its fullest. Health will help students examine their lifestyle, select goals, and make plans to achieve and maintain optimum health. This involves choosing behaviors that help prevent illness and accidents, promote health for oneself and others, or improve the quality of the environment.

"Look to your health; and if you have it ... value it
next to a good conscience, for health is a blessing
that money cannot buy."      -Izaack Walton
