Brothers competing in Brazoria County Spelling Bee Anjay A. has proven he doesn’t need things to be spelled out for him – he has again won the Pearland Junior High South (PJHS) Spelling Bee for the second year in a row.
This ability apparently runs in the family since his brother, Rajiv, has also won a spelling bee. Rajiv, a fourth-grade student at Massey Ranch Elementary, went 39 rounds before he was declared the winner.
Award-winning author and story teller, Joe Hayes, recently visited students at Shadycrest Elementary. Hayes has published over 20 children’s books and is the author of the 2007 Texas Bluebonnet Book nominee, "Ghost Fever." Student selected by the Houston Dynamos Jabril J., an eighth grader at Pearland Junior High West, has been selected by the Houston Dynamos, the 2006 Major League Soccer Champions, to join and train with the Dynamo under 15 Youth Soccer Academy. Jabril plays soccer with Texas Soccer Club on the under 14 Premier Division Team. He has also been selected to play with the Olympic Development Program Region 3 team that will travel to play in Mexico in February.
PACE Students Are Visited by the Houston Zoomobile Most children like to go to the zoo. At the Pearland Center for Academic Excellence (PACE), the zoo paid a visit to the students.
Laura Sanches, academic specialist for the Houston Zoo, recently visited Joan Hilsman’s ninth grade biology class at PACE where she spoke to the students about endangered animal species. Her visit was a part of the Houston Zoomobile, an outreach program for students of all ages.
Pearland High School Academic Decathlon team takes first at home Home field advantage proved to be a plus for the Pearland High School Academic Decathlon Team as they earned first place at the Region V Competition held at the high school Jan. 19-20.
“These are outstanding students,” says Robert Layne, team coach. “I congratulate them on their hard work and dedication.”
The team won a total of 58 medals and the Region V Title.
Snow may be a rarity in Texas, but students in Susan White's class at Silverlake Elementary were still able to make snowmen by using some common household items. The students took balloons, filled them with water and froze them. Then, they used salt to put the ice balls together after the balloons were peeled off. The students were divided into groups and decorated the snowmen. The students also predicted which one would melt first and wrote a story describing what the snowman looked like.
Geologist rocks Challenger Elementary students’ world Cleavy McKnight, an Exxon/Mobil geologist, came to Challenger Elementary to Nancy Chance's and D'Andra Crews' class recently and discussed his favorite subject -- rocks. McKnight talked about the three different kinds of rocks, characteristics of rocks, how rocks are formed and the rock cycle.
Silverlake Elementary Spelling Bee held December 13. Twenty-eight students in grades first through fourth participated in the spelling bee. The spelling bee judges were Pearland ISD Board of Trustee Secretary Leticia Farnie and Noel Gray, Pearland ISD curriculum & instruction coordinator of English language arts. Kyle Lin (right), a fourth grader in Anne Sadtler's class, was the school spelling bee champion. He will go on to compete in the Brazoria County spelling bee. Alaina Benavidez, a fourth grader in Cheryl Sweeney's class, was the runner up.
Massey Ranch Elementary students came to school dressed in their pajamas for PJ Day, a special dress day that emphasizes recreational reading. Students brought blankets, pillows and stuffed animals and read stories about various subjects including how people celebrate Christmas in other countries.
