Pearland High School volleyball players, in partnership with Nike, turned their biggest event of the year into a benevolent fundraising opportunity for cancer patients.

Through T-shirt and Nike product sales, the Pearland Volleyball Classic raised $10,000 last month for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, with Nike giving 100 percent of its sales to the fundraiser.

The PHS volleyball program and Nike presented the check Sept. 17 to M.D. Anderson.

“We decided to donate the money to M.D. Anderson to raise more awareness of healthcare among our players,” PHS head volleyball coach John Turner said.

The annual Pearland Volleyball Classic was held in late August at Pearland and Dawson high schools, Berry Miller Junior High and Pearland Junior High South.

This year the classic drew 76 top teams from Texas and Louisiana. Started by Turner 12 years ago, it is one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious high school volleyball tournaments.
