District boasts second-, sixth-place wins at international FPS

Pearland ISD students and teams won four top-10 spots worldwide during the Future Problem Solving Program international conference in Wisconsin June 10-13.

Students from Jamison Middle School, Berry Miller Junior High and Dawson High School donned their thinking caps and broke out their research, creativity, teamwork and communication skills to compete against 2,500 other contestants from around the globe.

Winning second in the middle division community problem solving competition were Berry Miller teammates Anita Rao, Drew Hall, Carolyn Martin, Shiv Patel, Kayla Scott, Shelby Stanfield, Yimeng Wang and Sharon Yang.

DHS’s Theresa Do and Melissa Bai placed second in middle division and senior division alternate teams, respectively.

Jamison teammates Jason Quimio, Michael Farner, Marshall Foster and Aaron Macias placed sixth in the junior division team competition, with alternates including Molly Hydorn and Claire Thomas.

Coaches included Alicia Lauve from DHS, Georgette Arthur and Rachel Sauer from Berry Miller and Jay Tillis from Jamison. In addition, Rogers Middle School teacher Kathleen Gibbs assisted Tillis and the Jamison team.

FPS involves more than 250,000 students annually from the United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia and Singapore.

Pearland ISD launched the program at campuses in 2000.
