Turner CCHS dental program provides exams to students at Magnolia Elementary
Turner College and Career High School dental students provided free exams and fluoride treatments to Magnolia Elementary students on April 10.
Fifteen students from Belinda Ganceres-Garcia’s TCCHS dental program partnered with Smiles for Schools for Super Hero Smile Day. With the help of a dentist and dental hygienist, students checked for tooth decay and other dental problems, along with providing a fluoride varnish protection treatment.
“We did the screenings and fluoride treatments at no cost and will be sending a report to parents on our findings and invite them back to our clinic at Turner for a follow-up,” Ganceres-Garcia said.
Dental students set up activity stations for elementary students to participate in while waiting to be seen by the dentist. Activities included how to brush and floss properly and a tooth fairy table with questions and answers.
TCCHS senior Ali Adams helped with the fluoride treatment during the Super Hero Smile Day.
“I think this is a good program for those students who can’t afford to get dental care,” Adams said. “I also get the experience by being here today and can apply it for my future.”
A stuffed dinosaur and teeth mold were used to help students learn how to properly brush their teeth and floss.
“Some of the students did not know how to floss, but we were able to teach them and that made us all feel good knowing we helped them,” junior Theresa Sibi said.
By the end of the day, the TCCHS dental program saw over 200 students and each received a new toothbrush, toothpaste and floss to take home.
