New Math Standards Update:

In 2012, the State Board of Education approved revisions for the mathematics standards to be fully implemented in 2014-15.

The new TEKS will affect all grade levels, Kindergarten through Pre-Calculus. At every grade level, current TEKS have been shifted down to lower grades and newly written TEKS were added. Pearland ISD has taken measures to help support these learners through the transition and also prepare them for the required standards starting in 2014 for Kindergarten through 8th grade and in 2015 for High School Math.

FAQ's Regarding New Standards:

What are TEKS and standards? The TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) are the state standards for what learners, at each grade level and in each subject, should know and be able to do. The State’s accountability testing system- STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) tests learners on this knowledge.

Why are we making Math changes? In April, 2012, the State Board of Education (SBOE) approved revision for the mathematics TEKS to be fully implemented by the 2014-15 school year.

The State Board of Education (SBOE) mandates the curriculum standards (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for all schools in Texas. The SBOE “Instructional Review” committee regularly reviews curriculum standards and makes revisions that all schools must implement. The “Instructional Review” committee is comprised of educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers.

For more information about the State Board of Education timeline for the revisions to the Math TEKS go to .

How are the Math standards changing? At every grade level, current TEKS have been shifted down to lower grades and newly written TEKS were added which requires new curriculum at each grade level. Click here to view a chart of all grade levels.

How do these standards compare to other states? The new Math TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) align more closely with what most other states require. However, the difficulty is that the curriculum requires the same amount of depth of material, but adds more breadth to be taught in the same amount of time.

How are the educators being trained to implement this new curriculum? Educators have already been and will continue to participate in specific professional development to help tackle the challenges of the new standards and amount of standards required.

Is our math curriculum aligned K-12th grade? Yes.

Grades are updated a minimum of once a week.
