Registration for CBE's and Kindergarten AccelerationDue to the unusual circumstances of state-mandated school closures, Pearland ISD is not currently accepting registration forms for the June and July 2020 CBE tests or the June 9th Kindergarten Acceleration test. Pearland ISD will provide opportunities for registration and administration of these exams if a safe testing environment can be provided at a later date this summer prior to the first day of school. Please continue to monitor the Pearland ISD website for updates.
Assessment for acceleration from kindergarten into first grade is a process available to students who are currently enrolled in the Pearland Independent School District.
A child must be five years on or before September 1 of the current year in order to be eligible to take the advanced placement exams.
The student must be enrolled in Pearland ISD schools.
- Parents interested in kindergarten acceleration for their child must make an appointment to discuss this option with the student’s principal and/or counselor.
- The parent must obtain the registration form from their zoned campus counselor or principal and return the completed forms to the zoned campus. Since the purpose of testing is to determine academic strengths PRIOR to formal instruction, Pearland ISD does not provide study materials or furnish textbooks.
- The application form must be completed and returned to the campus office by 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2020.
- Once the form is turned in, the campus will provide the parent/guardian with a Webstore link to pay the $25 deposit.
- Once the form and deposit receipt are received, a comfirmation email is sent to the parent email address on the Kindergarden Acceleration form.
The Kindergarten Acceleration test will be administered only on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.
Administration of Kindergarten Acceleration Tests
Testing will take place according to provisions in state law. The Kindergarten Acceleration exam is a three-hour test. A student receving a Kindergarten Acceleration final score in the 80th percentile is then moved to the Pearland ISD Kindergarten Mastery test. All parents are notified of final scores. Any student moving to the Mastery Exam will be contacted to schedule further testing.
Criteria for Advanced Placement
Any student who meets the eligibility requirements and who participates in the scheduled testing qualifies for advanced placement out of kindergarten if he/she meets ALL the following criteria:
Achievement Test: Scores at or above the 80th percentile on all subtests of the approved achievement test for kindergarten (includes subtest totals in reading, language, mathematics).
Kindergarten Mastery Test: Scores 80th percentile or above.
Parent Questionnaire/Social Skills: This information is completed by the parents so that school personnel will be informed about the student’s maturity and social development readiness for advancement. No set score is required. Please see the second page of the Kindergarten Acceleration Registration Form for the questionnaire.
Recommendation for Acceleration: The parent indicates permission for the student to accelerate to first grade. Careful consideration of this permission should be given, since successful completion of these requirements will be interpreted the same as promotion to first grade and will preclude the kindergarten year. All documentation shall be recorded on the student’s permanent record for the grade skipped.
Review of the Application
A central committee (representatives from the Office of Curriculum and Instruction, kindergarten and/or first grade teacher, campus principal/counselor) will review the application form and determine personnel for administering the test. At the completion of the testing, this committee will reconvene to review all the results and make recommendations.
Note: Consistent with state requirements for acceleration through Credit by Examination in grades 1-12, the passing score for kindergarten acceleration are scores at or above 80th percentile on all subtests of the approved achievement test for kindergarten (reading, language, word analysis and mathematics) AND the district kindergarten mastery test. No appeals or waivers will be accepted.
