Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Jill Olson
I grew up in Bridge City, Texas, near Beaumont. I graduated from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance (bass) with a concentration in jazz and commercial music. In 2011, I graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Master’s of Arts Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a computer education specialization.
I began taking piano lessons in Kindergarten and continued throughout elementary school. I joined band in 6th grade as a percussionist and started playing the bass guitar in 7th grade. Bass became my main instrument but I still occasionally play percussion when the need arises. I also play the string bass, guitar, ukulele, and recorder. I have played in several rock and pop bands as well as jazz groups and the Lake Charles Symphony.
This is my 20th year at Lawhon. Prior to teaching at Lawhon, I taught in Garland ISD at Stephens Elementary and Rowlett Elementary for three years. I also taught in Calcasieu Parish in Louisiana at Vinton Elementary and Kaufman Elementary before moving back to Texas.
I have 2 boys. Tab is 26 and is the percussion director at Hitchcock ISD. Kip is 19 and currently attends Lamar University in Beaumont, TX as a Computer Game Development major.
