Texas Senate Bill 2124
Important update regarding programming for 5th grade students:
5th Grade Informational Nights will be held at all four middle schools on March 26, 6-7 p.m..
Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, in alignment with TEA and Texas Senate Bill 2124 (SB 2124), Pearland ISD will be required to establish a Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program beginning in 6th grade.
Why is this shift occurring?
- SB 2124 mandates that qualifying students automatically be placed in advanced math starting in 6th grade. With this mandate, the state of Texas ensures a consistent, accelerated math pathway that leads qualifying students to Algebra I by 8th grade.
- In Pearland ISD, our middle schools currently serve students in grades 5 and 6, while the state of Texas defines middle school as grades 6–8. With the passing of Senate Bill 2124, which identifies 6th grade as the official starting point for advanced math across the state, Pearland ISD will begin offering advanced classes in all subjects starting in 6th grade to align with these state expectations.
What does this mean for 5th grade students in Pearland ISD?
- Gifted and Talented (GT) students will continue to receive enrichment and support through cluster classes, as in grades K–4.
- Teachers will continue to provide differentiated instruction, enrichment opportunities, and advanced problem-solving activities.
- Students will engage in all grade-level TEKS without skipping essential content, ensuring a solid mathematical foundation.
- Students that meet the requirements of SB 2124 will automatically be enrolled in Advanced Math in 6th grade, putting them on track for higher-level math courses in junior high and high school.
- For students that qualify, the Geometry Pathway at the GT Academy will still be an option.
- Students will have the opportunity to select advanced courses in other subject areas in 6th grade based on interest and need while not being tied to an all advanced or nothing option.
We remain committed to supporting and challenging every learner, and we believe this shift will help ensure all students are well-prepared for future academic success.
