School Resource Officer

Formed in 1995, the Pearland Police Department School Resource Officer Unit provides Pearland ISD schools with quality law enforcement services. Currently, 10 SROs and one SRO Sargent serve throughout the district. The unit, which is a part of the Pearland Police Department Patrol Division, is dedicated to its mission of ensuring the safety and security of Pearland ISD students and staff.

What is a School Resource Officer?

School Resource Officers are commissioned police officers by the State of Texas. In Pearland ISD, we partner with the Pearland Police Department, and they provide 10 high quality Police officers and one Sergeant to work in our schools. These officers are visible in the school and perform the duties of regular patrol officers with an emphasis on enforcing criminal laws inside the school. 

What is the role of a school resource officer?

Resource officers enforce criminal laws that may be broken inside the school. In addition, they provide security for our campuses and engage in routine patrols of the campuses. They are also visible throughout the day and interact with students and staff.

How is a Resource officer different than a patrol officer?

Resource officers and patrol officers are the same and carry the same qualifications and requirements. In some cases, officers feel drawn to the school environment and apply for SRO positions, much like an officer may request to work on the S.W.A.T. team or participate as a K-9 handler.

Can a School Resource Officer perform an arrest?

Yes. School Resource Officers are commissioned police officers and perform all the duties of a patrol officer. In fact, during school holidays, our SROs return to the patrol division to support the needs of the city.

Do SROs work outside of the school?

SROs may be seen on patrol during school holidays and over the summer months. SROs can also be seen supporting extracurricular school events such as football games and volleyball games.

Do SROs perform other duties inside the school?

School Resource officers will be seen walking around the school and interacting with students, though they do not have school administrative duties such as lunch duty or engaging in school discipline.
