Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is related service that focuses on a student’s ability to function in the school setting and participate in desired daily life activities or “occupations”. Occupational therapy in public schools concentrates on the student’s performance in the areas of hand skills (fine motor), self-care, social skills, and play/leisure skills. Sensorimotor aspects of school such as writing, eating, and handling materials are also focused on depending on the individual student’s need.
The goal of Occupational Therapy in public schools is to maximize the occupational performance of the student with disabilities due to physical, developmental, sensory, attentional, or learning challenges. Services can be provided directly to students or indirectly through consultation or recommended adaptations of tasks or assistive devices.
An assessment by a certified Occupational Therapist is required in order to be considered for occupational therapy services.
