Mr. Alistair Hughes

Hey everyone!

I am Mr. Hughes or Coach Hughes or just Hughes, my students will attest that I respond to any of those 3. I teach AP Human Geography and US History and I am the head coach of the boys soccer team here at Dawson High School. I am a graduate of Texas A&M University (Class of 2012) where among other things I competed for the Aggie speech and debate team, as well as played rugby and soccer for the A&M club teams. I double-majored in Communications and Sociology, and after bouncing around several jobs in hospitality management and sales I found my way to teaching and coaching 6 years ago and I have loved every minute of it.

I am an immigrant to the United States. My family and I came here back in 2007 from the United Kingdom but I was born on a tiny island in the Caribbean called St. Vincent. My father is Vincentian and my mother is English and now we all live in America, and my strange background and story is part of why I love teaching Humanities classes so much. This is a fascinating planet we live on and Humanities classes challenge us to learn about the World outside our own little bubbles. I truly believe that traveling and exposing yourself to different cultures and ways of life is one of the most important learning experiences that we can have as human beings and teaching Humanities subjects allows me to contribute to that in some small way. I've been very fortunate in my life to travel to a lot of different places and I like to think bringing my experiences into the classroom helps to make me a better teacher.

As far as hobbies go I'm a big reader, I play video games, write short stories, make my own hot sauce, play a little guitar, I love to cook, and I still play a little soccer every once in a while.

I look forward to this new school year and working with a fresh set of faces!
