District Celebrates National School Counseling Week

Counseling Week 2024

During National School Counseling Week Feb. 5-9, Pearland Independent School District recognizes its 53 school counselors and the many ways they contribute to student success.

School counselors are often associated with college and career guidance, but they do much more, helping students become their best now and in the future. They are certified/licensed educators trained in school counseling with unique qualifications and skills to address all students’ academic, personal/social and career development needs.

These professionals provide social and emotional support to our students while providing the following components of the comprehensive school counseling program set by the state of Texas: guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support. Additionally, school counselors collaborate with administrators, staff and parents to community and student needs at home and school.

Their roles are as diverse as the students they serve.

To help students succeed in the classroom, school counselors remove barriers to learning by addressing academic concerns and personal and social skills.

Students may meet personally or in groups with their school counselor for help with self-reflection -- from examining their abilities and interests to realizing their potential and setting optimistic goals.

All Pearland ISD counselors are trained in mental health awareness, hold a master’s degree and have at least two years of teaching experience.

“Pearland ISD’s school counselors are invested in the lives of students and passionate about supporting their campus, district and community in various ways,” Dr. Chenda Moore, Pearland ISD Coordinator of Guidance Services, said. “School counselors provide a unique contribution within our schools by their tremendous impact in helping students achieve academic success and plan for their future. They strive daily to incorporate leadership, advocacy, promote equity and access to opportunities and rigorous educational experiences for all students.”

Beyond their similar professional backgrounds, what Pearland ISD’s counselors share most of all is their love for students.
