Glenda Dawson High School Band Awarded Prestigious Sudler Flag of Honor

DHS Sudler Award

Pearland Independent School District’s Glenda Dawson High School Band was the only band in the United States selected as the 2025-26 recipient of the Sudler Flag of Honor, the highest international recognition for high school concert band programs. Awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, this distinction identifies Dawson High School as one of the premier musical ensembles in the world.

The Sudler Flag of Honor is designed to recognize high school band programs that have demonstrated particularly significant high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years. Unlike annual competitions, this award evaluates the long-term consistency, musicality, and holistic success of a program.

To qualify for this elite honor, the Dawson High School Band led by Aaron Brown, met rigorous criteria established by a selection committee of distinguished high school and university directors. These requirements include consistent "Superior" ratings at state, regional, and national levels, maintaining a complete program including concert, solo, ensemble, and marching components, the band must also be led by a director who has served the program for at least seven consecutive years.

"Receiving the Sudler Flag of Honor is a monumental milestone for the Glenda Dawson High School Band and a testament to the culture of excellence cultivated within our Pearland ISD music programs,” Tom Bell, Director of Fine Arts said. “This award does not just recognize a single performance, it honors years of relentless dedication from our students, the unwavering commitment of our directors, and the incredible support of our community. Seeing our students take their place on the Sousa Foundation's Historic Roll of Honor is a proud moment for all of us."

As a recipient, the Dawson High School Band will be presented with a unique four-by-six-foot nylon flag in red, white, and blue with gold fringe. Additionally, the band director will receive an engraved plaque, and every student member will be honored with an individualized diploma.

Most significantly, the Glenda Dawson High School Band will be automatically inducted into the Sousa Foundation's Historic Roll of Honor of outstanding high school concert bands, cementing their place in music education history.

The award is made possible through the generosity of the late Louis and Virginia Sudler. Louis Sudler, a successful businessman and baritone soloist with the Chicago Civic Opera, dedicated his life to supporting talented young musicians. Through the John Philip Sousa Foundation, the Sudler family’s legacy continues to inspire excellence in wind band performance worldwide. The Dawson High School Band members will be presented with the Sudler Flag of Honor during a concert and ceremony at the Moore's Opera House at the University of Houston on Saturday May 9th 2026 at 8:00 PM.
