Pearland ISD Eighth Grader Advances to Round Six at Regional Spelling Bee

Annika Bhagat BMJH

Berry Miller Junior High eighth-grade student Annika Bhagat represented Pearland Independent School District at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, competing alongside more than 50 students from schools across the greater Houston area.

Bhagat was supported in attendance by her father and twin sister as she took part in her first-ever regional spelling bee competition. The event opened with an introductory round designed to help students become familiar with the format and procedures of the spelling bee.

Preparing for the competition, Bhagat used the official Words of the Champions study list, a collection of approximately 4,000 words divided into three categories and provided to all regional bee participants. She also utilized the accompanying study app, which offers spelling and vocabulary quizzes.

“I studied for the bee using their app,” Bhagat said. “They had definition and spelling quizzes I used. I was nervous about participating in the bee but looked forward to having the opportunity. It’s something I have never done.”

Bhagat advanced through multiple rounds of competition and was eliminated in round six with the word moiety, surpassing her own expectations in a highly competitive field. Her achievement reflects dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to academic excellence.

Bhagat’s participation highlights the strong academic opportunities and supportive learning environments fostered throughout Pearland ISD.
