Pearland ISD Student Selected as Regional Representative for Prestigious Texas Bluebonnet Award

Texas Blue Bonnet Award

Elliott (Ellie) Walker, a student at Sablatura Middle School, was selected to represent Pearland Independent School District and the Greater Houston area at the prestigious Texas Bluebonnet Award presentation during the Texas Library Association Annual Conference.

The Texas Bluebonnet Award is one of the most distinguished children’s choice literary honors in the United States. Each year, students across Texas read from a curated list of 20 books and vote for their favorite. From thousands of applicants across the state, only ten students, one from each regional district, are chosen to participate in the official award ceremony.

As the representative for District 8, which spans 28 counties in the Greater Houston area, Walker played a pivotal role in the event. She conducted a pre-presentation interview with Minda Dentler, the author of this year's winning book, The Girl Who Figured It Out. Dentler’s inspiring work chronicles her journey as the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship. Following the interview, Walker took the stage to officially announce the winning title to the audience of educators, librarians, and authors.

“Ellie is a voracious reader and a fantastic representative of our district’s devotion to literacy,” said Sablatura Middle School Librarian, Rachael Welsh. “Her passion for books and her leadership in the library community make her the perfect ambassador for this honor.”

At Sablatura Middle School, Walker is an active member of the Library Ambassador club and serves on the school's inaugural "Battle of the Bluebonnets" team for the first-ever district-wide book competition. Walker’s participation in the TBA presentation highlights Pearland ISD’s commitment to fostering supportive learning environments and promoting a lifelong love of reading.
