PHS and TCCHS advance to Academic Decathlon state competitions

Academic Decathlon 2024

The Academic Decathlon teams from Pearland High School and Turner College and Career High School competed at the Region 5 competition on January 27-28 at Clear Springs High School.

PHS won second place in the large school division and will be advancing to the Thomas E. Moseley state competition in San Antonio.

TCCHS won third place in the medium school division as well as second place in the medium school Super Quiz competition and will be advancing to the state competition in Frisco.

Students from both schools won medals in multiple events:

Pearland High School

Honors

  • Jason Crandall won a silver medal in Social Science and a bronze medal in Music.
  • Sarah Muhammad won a gold medal in Science and a bronze medal in Social Science.
  • Kaiden Vo won a gold medal in Essay, silver medals in Math and Social Science, and a bronze medal in Science. Kaiden was the third highest ranking individual student in the Large School Honors division.

Scholastic

  • Kelsi Barker won a bronze medal in Speech.
  • Vincent Custer won a silve4r medal in Social Science and a bronze medal in Essay.

Varsity

  • Landon Guest won a bronze medal in Art.
  • Tadewa Oyewole won gold medals in Math and Economics and bronze medals in Music and Essay.  He was the third highest ranking individual student in the Large School Varsity division.
  • Gabriela Parra won gold medals in Music, Science, Literature, and Art and a silver medal in Social Science.  She was the second highest ranking individual student in the Large School Varsity division.

Also competing for PHS was Bradley Tobola. 

PHS coaches are Harley Simms, Andrea Peel, Ellen Lachney and Rachel Durham.

 

Turner College and Career High School

Scholastic

  • Thomas Lambert won a gold medal in Economics, silver medals in Math and Essay, and a bronze medal in Science.
  • Kaytlynn Norman won a silver medal in Math.
  • Benjamin Roberts won a gold medal in Math and Bronze medals in Economics, Science, and Essay.

Varsity

  • Benjamin Chicoria won a gold medal in Essay, a Silver medal in Interview, and a bronze medal in Social Science.
  • John-Paul Nguyen won a silver medal in Science and a bronze medal in Math.

Also competing for TCCHS were Mia Rhodus, Marvin Ruiz-Martinez, Henry De La Cruz and Aaron McNeill.

TCCHS coaches are Kyla Mora, Jason Williams, Jeffrey Brewer and Karen Wehman.
