Besides encouraging teenagers to develop a deep appreciation for reading and writing, my main purpose as an educator is to create an environment in which students feel comfortable taking risks: whether it's writing from a different viewpoint or participating during discussions. As a child who grew up in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, I was the shy kid who sat in the back of the classroom and who spoke only when my teacher prompted me to contribute. Now, I am about to begin my 10th year as an English teacher at Pearland H.S.
To say that I love literature is an understatement. Outside of teaching, I publish; my most recent book, Olympic Butter Gold: Poems, won the 2014 Cave Canem/Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize. I also enjoy reading poetry, short stories, and comic books as well as watching cult films and listening to reggae, punk rock, and Golden Era rap music from the 90's.
As a father and a husband, I am equally passionate about my three boys and wife who keep me grounded.
