Mathis named new Cockrell Elementary principal
Cockrell Elementary welcomes Rebecca “Rusty” Mathis as its new leader.
The Pearland Independent School District Board of Trustees named Mathis principal of Cockrell during its August 25 meeting.
A Pearland ISD graduate, Mathis has served as an assistant principal at Magnolia Elementary for the past five years. Prior to returning to Pearland, she served as an assistant principal, special education director and special education teacher in Salt Lake City School District and Spring Branch ISD.
Her motto as the new Cockrell Elementary principal comes from a Jack Welch quote ‘when you become a leader, success is all about growing others.’
“I have always enjoyed building the scaffolding around students, teachers and schools to help them become more successful,” she said. “My vision for the students, teachers and staff at Cockrell is that they continue to grow and reach their maximum potential in an environment where they feel supported and valued.”
Mathis is also passionate about advocating for students with disabilities.
“I felt a strong connection to my younger cousin who was born with Cerebral Palsy and found interest in the support systems in place for students with disabilities.”
With 25 years of experience in education, Mathis holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Utah, a master’s degree in special education from the University of South Carolina and a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education from Stephen F. Austin State University.
“I look forward to continuing our journey to success at Cockrell. Our students’ safety, well-being and academic successes are our focus,” she said. “I will strive to make a difference by supporting teachers to be world-class and supporting students to succeed in both character and academic development.”
