Students compete at TMSCA state meet

      Pearland Independent School District students recently did the math to rack up multiple successes at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association state competition online.

      The district had 42 students compete in the TMSCA state meet -- an intermediate-grades competition that builds interest in University Interscholastic League math and science events for older students.

      Pearland ISD awards in the 6A division include. . .

      Sablatura Middle School

  • Justin Braden: First Place General Science and Second Place Science Team; also scored highest overall in 6A schools for 6th, 7th and 8th grades
  • Josh Anino: Third Place General Science; Eight Place Calculator; Team Place Science Team

      Berry Miller Junior High

  • Patrick Hughes: Second Place Science Team
  • Anya Narayan: Second Place Science Team

      Additionally, Sablatura Middle School’s Alan Yao, Rogers Middle School’s Jonathan Zhang and Pearland Junior High West’s Jerry Zhu were state qualifiers in the regional round of the competition.

      Pearland ISD coaches included Margaret Needler from Sablatura, Ashley Eddy from Berry Miller, Jennifer Phillips from Rogers and Jamie Williams from PJH West.

      TMSCA offers four test areas -- Number Sense, Calculator Applications, General Math and General Science.

      In February and March, Pearland ISD students participated in several qualifying meets, advancing to state based on pre-set qualifying scores. At the state competition, the top 20 students and top five teams in each subject area win awards.
