Superintendent Dr. John Kelly announces retirement

After 10½ years serving as the Superintendent of Pearland ISD, Dr. John Kelly has announced his intentions to retire this coming summer. Kelly’s educational career spans 30 years as a Texas superintendent.

“During my 30-plus year educational career, my highest honor has been to serve the outstanding Pearland ISD community including the dedicated staff, amazing students and their families,” Kelly said.

Under Dr. Kelly’s leadership, Pearland ISD has continued to signify academic excellence and unlimited opportunities for students. Some of the achievements during his tenure include. . .

  • Creating the Dual Language Bilingual Education program
  • Opening Turner College and Career High School
  • Establishing Pearland ISD Education Foundation
  • Focusing on meeting student needs through RISE Mentoring, Pearland ISD Angel Tree Project and United for Kids community committee
  • Earning an “A”-rating in the Texas Education Agency A-F state accountability system
  • Successfully passing a $220 million bond and a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election
  • Increasing academic rigor through improved SAT/ACT scores, AP tests and career certifications

Appointed by the Texas Governor, Dr. Kelly also dedicated four years to serving on the State Board of Educator Certification, currently serving as Chairman.

“Dr. Kelly has been a tremendous asset and leader in Pearland ISD. He will leave incredibly big shoes to fill in many respects and the board and I wish him only the best,” Board President Sean Murphy said.

The Board plans to begin its search for a new superintendent and Dr. Kelly has committed to working with the Board and central administration during the transition.
