Foundation for Music Education honors Pearland ISD bands

BMJH_National Winner        Pearland Independent School District recently celebrated two bands earning national acclaim in The Foundation for Music Education awards programs.

       The Berry Miller Junior High School Honors Band, under the direction of Chris Bennett, was selected as a national winner, and the Pearland Junior High School West Honors Band, under the direction of Meredith Bates Bishop, was selected as a commended winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project.

       The Mark of Excellence consists of the National Wind Band Honors, National Choral Honors, National Orchestra Honors, National Jazz Honors and National Percussion Ensemble Honors. It is a competition, entered by recordings, in which the top quarter are selected as National Winners and the second quarter receive Commended Honors. This year, 320 entries from 38 states competed.

       Berry Miller’s Honors Band performed Robert Russell Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances” and Robert Jager’s “Variation on a Theme of Robert Schumann”.

       “The students attend weekly section rehearsals, listening sessions and multiple performances and competitions throughout the spring semester,” Bennett said. “This award is a recognition of the hard work, dedication and team work of a group of young musicians coming together to perform interesting and exciting literature together. It showcases the talents and abilities of our young musicians.”

       PJH West’s Honors Band performed Musella’s “Don Hanna March”, Scriabin/Reed’s “Nocturne Op 9, No 2” and Williams’ “Symphonic Dance No. 3”.

       “We were thrilled to be recognized once in 2018. To place for a second time is a huge honor and proof of our students’ dedication and commitment to excellence,” Bates Bishop said. “I am humbled to be listed among the top band programs in the state and country. It is such a privilege to be a part of the Pearland ISD Fine Arts Program.”

       Citation of Excellence Winners

       For the second consecutive year, Berry Miller Junior High Symphonic Band placed in the top 25 percent of Texas high school non-varsity bands to receive the 2019 Citation of Excellence.

       Directed by Heather Massey, the BMJH Symphonic Band performed Chambers’ “March of the Freedom Fighters” and Beck’s “La Madre de Los Gatos”.

BMJH Symphonic_Citation of Excellence Winner        “I am so proud that the Berry Miller Symphonic Band has been a consistent winner in this competition,” Massey said. “There aren’t many other contests in which we get to compete head to head with other non-varsity bands. Being consistent winners is a testament to the dedication to music education of the students and staff at Berry Miller.”

       The Foundation for Music Education supports and advances band, choir, orchestra and elementary music education programs through awards, scholarships and educator training programs.
