Four students advancing to State VASE

Pearland Independent School District artists received top ratings during the regional Visual Arts Scholastic Event in February.

Of 125 Pearland ISD entries at the regional event, 79 earned medals and four high school students qualified to advance to State VASE on April 26-27.

Advancing students include Alyssa Cripps (with “Unfinished: Artist Battling Depression”), Jamie Lincoln (with “Explosion’) and Helen Wang (with “Delicate” and” Rift”) and PHS’s Faith Derise (“A Fish ous Cycle”).

Texas High School VASE began its 25th season in January of 2019. The first VASE event was held in 1994 with just over 400 student entries; in 2019, approximately 35,000 artworks were entered in VASE. Students create artworks, write about their creative processes and understanding of visual art, and articulate information about their artwork during an interview with a VASE juror, who evaluates their work using a standards-based rubric. Art jurors look for originality, technical expertise, understanding of visual art and interpretation of the student’s stated intent.

Only the top 10% of each division’s artworks at the Regional level were selected to advance to the High School VASE State Event, for a total of 2,372 entries advancing.
