In the ready writing contest students were given a choice between 2 prompts to write an expository essay. The spelling and vocabulary test was made up of two parts: part one with 30 multiple choice questions over vocabulary and proofreading and part two with the spelling of 70 words that were pronounced out loud to the students competing.
Students were eligible to advance to state as an individual if they placed in the top three in the region or as a team if they were the top team in the region or the wildcard (the highest scoring second place team in the state). These students competed against students from eight high schools at the district level and seven districts at the regional level to advance to state.
