Dr. Vaughn named Director of Early Childhood Education

Dr LaKesha Vaughn        Pearland Independent School District welcomes Dr. La'Kesha Vaughn as its first director of early childhood education effective February 1.

Dr. Vaughn has served as Rogers Middle School principal for five years and has been with Pearland ISD serving in several roles for over 15 years. She comes from a family with an extensive background as educators, with her grandmother, mother and great aunt being in education for 41, 32 and 45 years, respectively.

Her first years in education were spent teaching second and fourth grades at Giesinger Elementary in Conroe ISD. Upon coming to Pearland, Dr. Vaughn served as a third-grade teacher before moving into assistant principal and principal roles at Sablatura Middle School and Silverlake Elementary.

“As the first director of early childhood education, my vision for the staff and the district are aligned: to empower and prepare all students to strive, thrive, advocate and collaborate by becoming world-class citizens who embrace challenges,” Dr. Vaughn said. “We will prepare all students to be innovative forward thinkers in an ever-changing diverse society.”

Dr. Vaughn will be coordinating Pearland ISD’s new full-day pre-kindergarten program that is set to begin in the fall of 2020. The program is being expanded from half-day to full-day and will be offered at every elementary campus to students who meet the eligibility requirements. Dr. Vaughn’s responsibilities will include recruiting of students and teachers, community and parent programs, campus support for facilities, food service and transportation as well as curriculum modifications and resources for teachers.

Once the program begins, Dr. Vaughn will work with Pearland ISD’s director of elementary education, Dawn Lyssy, on programs for pre-emergent readers. She will also be supporting campuses in critical areas as needed, as programs are established according to campuses’ individual needs.

Dr. Vaughn holds a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Prairie View A&M University, a master’s degree in educational administration and a bachelor’s degree in academic studies, both from Sam Houston State University.

“I look forward to working with other great educational leaders in our district to prepare and ensure continued success for all students in Pearland ISD by making sure they have a strong foundation academically, socially and emotionally,” she said.
