Foundation for Music Education honors PJH West treble choir

The Pearland Junior High West Treble Varsity Choir, under the direction of Ginny Blasczyk, recently earned national acclaim being named a Mark of Excellence national winner by The Foundation for Music Education.

The Mark of Excellence project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras. The project gathers entries from throughout the United States and provides valuable feedback for all entrants. A unique competitive environment is created which allows ensembles to compare their performance quality to other outstanding groups from across the country.

The top 25% of entrants are recognized as National Winners, with the second 25% named as Commended Winners. All entrants receive a compilation recording of the winning performances. Winners are recognized in regional and/or national publications and at national and regional conventions.

“Being a Mark of Excellence National Winner is a thrilling achievement for our choir as we were in competition with choirs from across the country. I am so very proud of these girls not only because of their undeniably superb performance but for also accepting the challenge when I proposed this set of repertoire to them,” Blasczyk said. “I am grateful to be in a place where singing enables us to make moments, memories and relationships that we can forever cherish.”

The Pearland Junior High West Treble Varsity Choir, as well as all other Pearland ISD junior high choirs, was able to apply for the award by submitting recordings of their UIL performance held in March of 2020 before Spring Break and the COVID-19 pandemic shut downs. Pearland ISD junior high and high school bands as well as high school choirs were not able to apply for the award this year due to not being able to participate in UIL competition in the Spring of 2020.

The Foundation for Music Education supports and advances band, choir, orchestra and elementary music education programs through awards, scholarships and educator training programs.
