District recognized with award for excellence in budget presentation
Pearland Independent School District was recently recognized by the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) for excellence in budget presentation with the Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for the 2020-21 budget year. This is the third time the district received the prestigious recognition by ASBO, a reflection of its commitment to fiscal integrity.
Participants submit their applications and budget documents to a panel of school financial professionals who review the materials for compliance with the MBA criteria checklist along with other requirements and provide expert feedback that districts can use to improve their budget documents. Districts that successfully demonstrate they have met the necessary program requirements earn the MBA.
“Receiving this award validates the time and effort spent by many stakeholders throughout the budget process to provide information that is complete and easy to understand for our constituents and decision makers, Jorgannie Carter, Pearland ISD’s Chief Financial Officer, said. “It allows us the opportunity to provide our community with the full picture of the district’s budget, the factors and process used to build the budget and comparable data from prior. It also tells our constituents that we are following best practices in presenting clear and transparent financial information.”
Being able to convey financial information that is thorough and easy to comprehend is a priority for Pearland ISD.
“School finances are everybody's business. Developing a budget document helps our community to better understand where our resources come from, how we spend them and the effect it has on our students. By providing tools for our stakeholders to better understand what’s behind the numbers, we aim to increase the trust and support of budgetary decisions,” Carter said.
