District offers COVID rapid testing at all campuses starting Feb. 1

Pearland Independent School District takes the health and safety of staff, students and their families very seriously. With this in mind, the district is pleased to take part in a statewide program offering voluntary COVID-19 rapid tests for use in schools.

The testing program is being implemented in phases within the district. On Monday, February 1, the district will begin Phase 3, which includes testing at all Pearland ISD schools of on-campus learners who are showing signs and symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

This phase of the testing only includes on-campus learning students. Remote learners, students at home due to quarantine and students home due to illness should not come to campus for testing. Pearland ISD plans to make testing available for all students in the future.

Phase 1 successfully began by testing employees showing signs and symptoms consistent with COVID-19. Phase 2 included testing symptomatic on-campus students at eight pilot campuses in the district.

The third phase of the program will allow Pearland ISD to test symptomatic on-campus students to reduce the risk to our community. Testing for COVID-19 is only one preventive measure that can help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and does not substitute for non-pharmaceutical interventions such as mask-wearing, hand washing and physical distancing.

The district will be using the BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card which is an antigen test. Antigen tests are designed to detect proteins from the virus that cause COVID-19 in respiratory specimens (i.e., nasal swabs). The BinaxNOW tests will provide results in 15 minutes and are administered using a nasal swab (to the shallow front of the nostrils only).
