January is National Mentoring Month

January is National Mentoring Month and this year Pearland ISD is celebrating the annual campaign aimed at expanding the quality mentoring opportunities to connect more students with caring adults by inviting community members to become a RISE mentor.

Currently through RISE Mentoring, Pearland ISD has approximately 440 students from grades K-12 matched with mentors who meet one-on-one each week.

To become a RISE mentor you must complete an application, online background check and register for one of the mentor trainings. Mentor and student matching for the current school year will continue through March 11.

      Why Mentor?

Research links mentoring to improved academic, social and economic prospects for young people -- in turn, strengthening communities nationwide.

RISE Mentoring volunteers come from diverse backgrounds, but all are united in wanting to offer an ear and time to students.

Frank Nance has been a mentor through RISE since 2016. He believes his relationship with his mentee benefits his personal growth just as much as it benefits his mentee’s.

“Every mentoring opportunity I have teaches me things about myself and about my perceptions that I grow from. Things I may take for granted or maybe even opportunities I might have ignored,” Nance said. “Having the opportunity to share things I normally wouldn’t, to be more vulnerable than I’m used to being, to teach myself to listen more deeply (a constant work in progress) and to just show up even when it’s hard, or far, or inconvenient…because this awesome young man is counting on me.”

       How to Mentor

RISE Mentoring training sessions are scheduled January through early March for those interested in volunteering this school year.

All mentors complete an online application, a background check and attend training before being matched with a student for the duration of the school year. Once matched, the mentor meets with the student at his or her campus for 30 minutes a week.

“We’re looking for people who care about kids and are committed. You or someone you know may just be that ‘one more’ person that a student needs,” Mandy Benedix, Pearland ISD mentor/volunteer specialist, said.

Below are training dates currently available for those who are interested in becoming a Pearland ISD mentor. All trainings listed will be offered at the Virgil Gant Education Support Center, 1928 N. Main, Pearland, TX. Additional private trainings maybe be scheduled for businesses interested in having more than one employee join RISE Mentoring.
