Foundation for Music Education honors Pearland ISD instrumental music ensembles

Pearland Independent School District recently celebrated instrumental music ensembles from four schools earning national acclaim in The Foundation for Music Education awards programs.

The Pearland High School Wind Ensemble, led by interim director Ken Brown and the Dawson High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Aaron Brown, were selected as national winners in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project. Berry Miller Junior High School Honors Band, directed by Chris Bennett, was selected a national winner under the New Music Division. Additionally, Pearland JH West Honors Band, directed by Meredith Bishop, was selected as a Commended Winner in the same awards program.

The Mark of Excellence project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras. The project gathers entries from throughout the United States and provides valuable feedback for all entrants. A unique competitive environment is created which allows ensembles to compare their performance quality to other outstanding groups from across the country. The top 25% of entrants are recognized as National Winners, with the second 25% named as Commended Winners.

The Mark of Excellence consists of the National Wind Band Honors, National Choral Honors, National Orchestra Honors, National Jazz Honors, National Percussion Ensemble Honors and National Mariachi Honors.

Citation of Excellence Winners

The Citation of Excellence project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by non-varsity high school and middle school bands and orchestras. A unique competitive environment is created which allows ensembles to compare their performance quality to other outstanding non-varsity ensembles. The top 25% of entrants are recognized as Citation Winners, with the second 25% named as Commended Winners.

The Berry Miller Junior High Symphonic Band, under the direction of Blake Lein, the Dawson High School Symphonic Band, directed by Nathan Coronado, and the Pearland High School Symphonic Band, directed by Gino Hernandez, placed in the top 25 percent of Texas high school non-varsity bands to receive the 2018 Citation of Excellence.

“We are so proud of our students’ hard work, dedication and team work. Having Pearland ISD instrumental music ensembles recognized with this award is a tremendous honor,” Pearland ISD Director of Fine Arts Tom Bell said. “Our young musicians show, day after day, that their commitment to excellence is second to none.”
