Pearland Junior High West All-Girls Robotics Team Receives Award
Pearland Junior High West’s Pearagon, an all-female robotics team, was recently recognized with the Motivate Award at the FIRST Tech Challenge Regional Championship on Feb. 23 at San Jacinto College. A total of 36 teams grades 7-12 competed in the championship.
The Award is presented to a team that exhibits leadership qualities outside the robotics competition arena. It celebrates the team that represents the essence of the FIRST Tech Challenge competition through team building, team spirit and displayed enthusiasm. This year, members of Pearagon mentored young engineers and programmers by conducting robotics workshops for and demonstrating their robot to elementary and middle school students.
The accolade is evidence of Pearagon’s commitment to the competition and to having a true team spirit.
“Receiving this award demonstrates true GRIT. It shows that the team went above and beyond the term ‘gracious professionalism’ by demonstrating team work, hard work and dedication,” Pearland ISD Advanced Academics Specialist Damon Rayburn said. “What makes it extra special is that the team did this on the first go around and will take Pearland Junior High West to new levels for overall program sustainability. Not only should the students be recognized, but also their coach Amanda Pratt and Gifted and Talented Academy Coordinator Jennifer Bill. The students mimic their dedication and determination.”
