Business Office recognized for excellence in financial reporting and transparency efforts

Pearland Independent School District’s Business Office recently received the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

The district was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2020. The report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

Additionally, Pearland ISD was awarded a Transparency Star in debt obligations by the Texas Comptroller’s Transparency Stars program, recognizing the district for their outstanding efforts in providing easy online access to important financial data, providing citizens with clear, consistent information about public spending (including outstanding debt, tax-supported debt obligations, historical bond elections and more) in user-friendly formats.

Earlier this year, the district also received a Transparency Star in Traditional Finance, for their efforts in making their spending and revenue information available.

The Comptroller’s office launched the Transparency Stars program in March 2016 to recognize cities, counties and school districts making important strides to greater government transparency. After receiving an initial star for Traditional Finances, remaining stars may be awarded in any order. Local government entities can apply for stars in the areas of:

  • Traditional Finances
  • Contracts and Procurement,
  • Economic Development
  • Public Pensions
  • Debt Obligations

Being recognized with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the GFOA and with a Transparency Star in the area of debt obligations by the Texas Comptroller is an acknowledgment of the District’s ongoing efforts to achieve excellence in financial reporting and provide financial transparency.
