Foundation for Music Education honors Pearland ISD instrumental music ensembles

      Pearland Independent School District recently celebrated three instrumental music ensembles earning national acclaim in The Foundation for Music Education awards programs.

      The Pearland High School Wind Ensemble, previously under the direction of Joe Munoz, and the Dawson High School Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Louis Boldrighini, were selected as a national winners in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project. Additionally, Berry Miller Junior High School Honors Band, directed by Chris Bennett, was selected as a Commended Winner in the same awards program.

      The Mark of Excellence consists of the National Wind Band Honors, National Choral Honors, National Orchestra Honors, National Jazz Honors and National Percussion Ensemble Honors. It is a competition, entered by recordings, in which the top quarter are selected as National Winners and the second quarter receive Commended Honors. This year, 236 entries from 38 states competed.

      Pearland High School Wind Ensemble performed Gould’s “Symphony for Band”, “La Procession du Rocio” by composer Turina and arranger Reed, and Williams’ “Midway March”.  Dawson High School Percussion Ensemble performed “Over the Rainbow” by Harold Arlen Arr. Robert Oetomo, “Fandango 13” by Michael Burritt and “Arabesque No. 1” by Claude Debussy Arr. Scott Hirsch. Berry Miller’s Honors Band performed “Brook Green Suite” by composer Holst and arranger Curnow, and “Laideronnette: Imperatrice des Pagodes” by composer Ravel and arranger Beck.

      “We are so proud of our students’ hard work, dedication and team work. Having three of our Pearland ISD instrumental music ensembles recognized with this award is a tremendous honor,” Pearland ISD Director of Fine Arts Tom Bell said. “Our young musicians show, day after day, that their commitment to excellence is second to none.”

      The Foundation for Music Education supports and advances band, choir, orchestra and elementary music education programs through awards, scholarships and educator training programs.
